Freda Smallwood

Freda Smallwood now resides in upstate New York and travels extensively in the United States and abroad, but she has lived most of her adult life in Central Asia. For over thirty years she worked with her late husband, Art, to improve the lives of the native people, especially their eyesight.  They helped establish and grow a well known eye hospital and related ministries in that Central Asian country.

Freda also served as an English teacher and in leadership roles for the expatriate community in the country on her heart.  Freda and Art raised their children in Central Asia, persevered through several regime changes, and lived in a difficult place out of love for God and His people.

Freda has seen much of God’s grace at work in the country on her heart, and her story now includes the sad task of experiences serving without Art, murdered in their country of service in 2010.  Her journey with God has been extraordinary, to be sure, but most importantly, it has been an ordinary Christian’s response to the world’s need and God’s call to serve.
